Spirit of Carnival Installation at Wyandanch Plaza, New York
Step into a vibrant world where powerful imagery and untold stories unravel the deep cultural roots of a tradition born from resistance and reclaimed joy across the Caribbean.
The Spirit of Carnival installation invites viewers to explore and reflect on thought-provoking questions such as: What is the role of women in Carnival? If you could portray a character in Carnival, who would you choose and why? What is the contemporary Caribbean Baby Doll masquerade? Curated by Harper Bella in collaboration with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and Creatives Rebuild New York, the installation features photography by Leah Gordon, Amanda T. McIntyre, Jaadyn Rogers, and Harper Bella, with images captured in Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States.
This public art installation encourages visitors to look beyond the familiar aspects of Carnival, guiding them to recognize its deep-rooted traditions dating back to the late 18th century. Emerging from a ritual known as Cannes Brûlées—which translates to "sugarcane burning"—this tradition originated in Trinidad and Tobago and soon spread to neighboring countries.
Through a compelling combination of photography, historical commentary, and questions inspired by Carnival’s folklore and cultural narratives, the installation immerses audiences in the spirit of a ritual born from resistance. The mission of this exhibition is to preserve and celebrate the essence of Carnival as it is honored across the Caribbean.
